Description of the Guide
Belgrade Fortress in Your Hands The new guidebook gives a holistic interpretation of Belgrade Fortress and its monuments by B. Rabotic. The text follows the itinerary through the fortification complex, suggested and selected by the author – a highly experienced professional tourist guide, and this is undoubtedly a route which offers not only an insight into different historical layers of this unique monument, but covers almost all its monuments preserved to this day.

Narration in the book is arranged in two ways: along with general descriptions of individual monuments and their historical, architectural and other features, there is additional commentary placed in side columns next to the main article about some interesting and unusual details, stories, legends as well as brief biographies of some important historical personalities. The main focus of the guidebook is on the fortification itself, though some other cultural and historical monuments preserved inside its walls are also described. In his interpretation of Belgrade Fortress as a fortification complex, B. Rabotic decided to single out its for separate fortified areas: Artillery fortification, Upper Town (Acropolis), Eastern Ward and Lower Town covering that way the complete site and spanning 1800 years of its eventful and turbulent history. All technical terms of military architecture used throughout the text can quickly be found in the “Dictionary” given at the end of the book. Additional quality of this guidebook is its superb variety of photographs, a few sketches and the two elaborate plans of the Fortress.

Branislav (Branko) Rabotic, MA
Mr. Rabotic, owner of a master’s degree in Tourism, has been working as a professional tourist guide for 30 years. He is specialist for archaeological, historical and cultural heritage tours. In 1998 he created a special program of regularly scheduled interpretative cultural walking tours of Belgrade Fortress. These tours, sponsored by the municipality of Old Town, are conducted to better inform the citizens of Belgrade, especially the youngsters, about the city’s cultural heritage and to promote a wider interest for cultural monuments generally. Mr. Rabotic made the first unofficial Web site dedicated to Belgrade Fortress in 1998. In 2006, he was appointed by the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Services as lecturer in the course for candidates applying for licenses as tourist guides at the Faculty of Tourism and Hotel Management (Singidunum University, Belgrade), for the subject “The Art of Guiding”. Mr. Rabotic received the 2005 “Tourism Flower Award” in the Tourist Guides category, an annual prize awarded by the Tourist Organization of Serbia.
